Safety
\When using any glass painting or staining products it is imperative that you minimize your exposure to the paint as much as possible and keep them stored in a dry location within a closed container out of reach of children, many of these products contain lead and cadmium which over exposure can lead to severe health difficulties over time.
PPE
Please ensure you are wearing a P2 respiratory mask on at all times when handling any of the materials, the material can enter your system via the lungs which leads to a buildup of lead within the blood stream. You can check the lead levels of your blood by asking your GP and having your blood taken by a pathologist to track how exposed you have been over time and if your safety measures are working.
When the materials are brushed off the glass whilst painting, the material can spread freely in the air, to further limit exposure it is advised that you wear clothing that is cleaned in anti-lead/anti heavy metal washing detergent/powder after use and is only used specifically for the purpose of glass painting. Another addition that can assist is the installation of a fan to suck out the material out of the air with a Hepa filter, in addition, all vacuum cleaners cleaning the area in which you are painting should be equipped with a Hepa filter.
Gloves may be worn for an added layer of protection, if you were to get the paint on your skin or under your fingernails and not clean it out properly, it could leach out during the handling or preparing of food or spread around the home as you touch objects.
Cleaning
Â
Always make sure to wipe down your painting area, as well as clean any objects that may have come in contact with the paints, dispose of the paper/material wipes accordingly.
Mediums
When mixing the paints into a medium such as turpentine or lavender oil, please use appropriate PPE to mitigate the odours and fumes.
Disposal
When disposing of unwanted paint, paint covered materials or anything containing lead, please research a local business near to you that specializes in the disposal of these materials. Leading up to the disposal keep all of your paint affected material in an airtight plastic container or bag.
